Local Food: Khao Yum - Rice Mixed With Thai Herbs

By Ianpassion

Food in Thailand will always amaze you. There are lots of varieties for your choice depending on each province.

One day the owner of the mini-store where I always buy my drinks and snacks asked about my breakfast. I replied that today I had a niyaw gai and cafe boran  (sticky rice with fried chicken and traditional Thai coffee).

He continued...

He asked me if I wanted to eat khao yum(rice mixed with Thai herbs). How could I say no to this offer? With thanks, I smiled and said to them thank you very much. I would love to eat it.

What I thought was maybe they noticed that I always eat sticky rice and fried chicken for my breakfast, ngai-ngai (easy meal) in the morning especially whenever I am busy. No wondered, they had that offer for me.

You know what, Thais are generally generous and sympathetic. It is not the first time that I got a free offer from someone even I am a complete stranger to him or her. I always appreciate them for doing this.

Khao yam is one of the famous Thai dishes in the South of Thailand, especially in Satun province. It means you don't usually find this meal in the capital, Bangkok and in the north, Chiangmai.

Mixed with different types of Thai herbs, one of that is the raw green peppercorn which I like the most. Khao yum is very rich in fiber and nutrition.

Bellow what khao yum comprises:

1. Boiled rice
2. Dried shrimp
3. Coconut flakes
4. Sour green mango
5. Pomelo
6. Lime
7. Bean sprouts
8. Sliced lemongrass
9. Kaffir leaves
10. Sweet spicy sauce
11.Boiled egg
12. green peppercorn

To savor your khao yum for a perfect and delicious meal, you have to mix all the ingredients very well on your plate.

What I usually do is I mix all until I see little juices come out from the herbs, then I start my first yummy scoop.

If you buy from the market, sellers would usually wrap it with a food paper and bind with an elastic rubber band.

On your visit to the South of Thailand, especially in Satun province or any Thai restaurant, you should not miss this tasty Thai local food.
