Eating Yummy Exotic Food, Satun Night Market, Thailand

By Ianpassion

One of the things that will amaze you when you are in Thailand is their delicious exotic foods. It was a lively night in the main town of Satun when I went there with my family. As usual, we preferred to explore the rugged street for our food.

We did not realize there were two events in the city - the Satun Kite International Festival and the OTOP festival. There were many people. The Night Market was the main attraction in the evening providing 500 meters walking-street, amusement facilities, and various choices of food, drinks, dessert, and more.

My wife told me that she and our kids would like to eat hot spicy noodles. But for me, for the sake of change, I decided to eat something unusual - fried worms, fried grasshoppers, and fried cockroaches. And for my drinks, I got a very icy sugar cane juice.

I asked the locals about how they got the white worms. They said they got it from the fallen rotten logs of coconut trees. To make the worms come into the fallen logs, they have to pour fish sauce. A few days later the trunk of the coconut rotten these white worms came and multiplied.

When the size of the worms reached the size of a thumb, then they are ready for harvest. Its skin is soft so it should be washed with water. Just shake its dirt, gently wipe, and blow the stinky grime. Once it is enough cleaned, then mix with some salt for frying.

After hearing that story:

I imagined how these delicious worms are now on my plate. Although it is normal in Thailand to eat fried insects and can be beneficial for our health because it contains high protein, I still find it hard to swallow. As I tried my fried worms,  I think they taste like fried squids, while grasshoppers and cockroaches were like fried shrimps.

That experience reminded me of John the Baptist (Mathew 3:4),  his daily meals - locusts and wild honey.

Below are snapshots of Satun Night Market.
